Welcome!
Fundamentals of Metalsmithing & Jewelry is an in-depth introduction to small-scale metal working. We will be working with copper, brass, and silver to learn the basic processes and become comfortable with the different metals and their properties. Over the course, you will make a small collection of your own creations through process-based learning and suggested projects.

This course is also fantastic as a refresher for individuals who do have some experience but would like to brush up on their skills and familiarity before working in the studio independently. Participants will leave this course with not only the work that they make, but also the skills needed to work independently during Open Studio hours.

Minimum skills and processes covered in this course:

Sawing, cutting & filing
Surface texturing
Cold connections
Soldering
Finishing
Simple patina

OPTIONAL:

Opt to include a Spring Open Studio Pass with the purchase of this course (discounted to $200 from $270, for enrolling students only!) and get access to the studio during all Open Studio Hours. Please note that Open Studio is intended to be used as independent work time. We do have staff available to answer questions, help find things, give advice, and etc. Open Studio does not include personal instruction. Students will be able to check out the personal toolkits during Open Studio at no additional cost (supplies may be limited, and are first-come first-served during Open Studio).

REQUIRED FOR STUDIO USE:

  • All studio users must complete and submit the studio use waiver prior to working in the studio (link in bottom right corner)

  • All studio users must follow safe clothing guidelines to work in the studio (close-toed shoes, long hair secured, avoid or restrain loose clothing, wear personal-protective-equipment as required (provided, or bring your own)
